It Only Takes a Spark

You know the song: “It only takes a spark to get a fire going . . . ” (In fact, this time of year you may find yourself around the campfire singing it quite often!)

But it does take a spark!

Just as the tiny mustard seed grows into a large plant, and a little bit of leaven raises a whole batch of bread, even a small word or act for Christ can grow into something big. Jesus will bless and multiply our efforts to work for Him—when we start!

“Every follower of Jesus has a work to do as a missionary for Christ in the family, in the neighborhood, in the town or city where he lives” (Testimonies for the Church, Volume 2, page 632).

Do you want to share your faith but are not sure what to do? Here are a few suggestions to get you started. Why not see how much you can accomplish in the next few months?

  • Tell a neighbor what Christ has done for you.
  • Visit or phone someone in your neighborhood who is lonely or sick.
  • Write a note of encouragement to someone who is sad or grieving.
  • Offer to help at your church’s Vacation Bible School.
  • Join a singing band and spread cheer at a hospital or nursing home.
  • Keep tracts in your bag or backpack, and hand them out wherever you go.
  • Volunteer to help in a local hospital or nursing home.
  • Offer to babysit for a young mother so she can rest, shop, or do something relaxing and enjoyable. Refuse to take payment.
  • Volunteer to help in your church’s Community Services outreach.
  • Share a loaf of homemade bread or cookies with a neighbor.
  • Plant a garden for a disabled person in your neighborhood. Then take care of it all summer, and deliver the produce right to their door!
  • Send a witnessing magazine to family members and friends on your prayer list.
  • Give copies of Young Disciple magazine to children in your neighborhood.
  • Start a story hour for the kids in your neighborhood. (Use Young Disciple’s Truth 4 Youth program to give them the full gospel message.)
  • Send Bibles to young people in Africa or another impoverished area.
  • Attend Young Disciple Youth Bible Camp and learn skills for evangelism, Bible work, colporteur ministry, or medical missionary outreach in your community.

“. . . and soon all those around can warm up in its glowing! That’s how it is with God’s love!”
